Tai Chi at Parchmore Community Centre
The philosophy of Yin and Yang underpins the slow, gentle movements of Tai Chi. A martial art in origin, many people practise today to bring calm and relaxation into their busy lives.
My name is Chris Milton and I have always loved movement, dancing as a child and teaching Keep Fit in the 1970’s. In the late 70’s I first encountered Tai Chi but had to wait 5 years to attend my first class at Surrey University in 1984. Since then I have been hooked.
There are many styles and forms of Tai Chi but they all stem from the same basic principles. I teach Cheng Man-Ch’ing’s Yang style short form and various Qigong sets, grounded in the background philosophy, history and principles of the art. My emphasis is on health and well-being.
I will be opening a new class in Thornton Heath from 21st January 2015, meeting every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm at Parchmore Community Centre in Parchmore Road (near Tesco). The class is open to beginners and those with previous experience.
I also teach a group as part of the Community Centre’s programme for senior citizens on Thursdays at 10am. New member are also welcome to come along to this class.
NEW CLASS STARTS THURSDAY 21ST JAN

From fashion design with recycled products to classical jazz, Thornton Heath Arts Week aims to profile the vast array of artistic talent in the area. From July 19 to 25 2014 residents of Thornton Heath will display their work at a variety of venues in this part of Croydon. (See recent blog for programme)
Planned and led by local residents, organisations, schools and businesses will profile their activities, individuals will be given a platform to display their talents in local venues and local people will learn of opportunities to access opportunities to take part in the arts within Thornton Heath.
The week will begin with an afternoon of celebration at the Thornton Heath leisure centre and the concourse of Ambassador House with the activities publicised through a website designed and maintained by local people.
In January we will begin to map out the activities and connect individual artists with potential venues. This map will be profiled by a dedicated website page and organisations will be invited to add to this in coming months. All are invited to contribute so we look forward to hearing from you.
We are holding a planning meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 14 th January 2014 at the Healthy LIving Centre at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre.
If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact us.
Dear Friends of Grangewood Park
Thank you for the kind offers of help for this Sunday’s Picnic in the Park. If you have volunteered a schedule will be coming round in the next day.
We still need more volunteers, even if just for an hour – especially to help steward (mainly directing people and giving out flyers), running the tea stall and lucky dip, and helping to set up. We need one or two more first aiders too.
We also need talented bakers – any cakes, large or small would be great as the tea stall helps to generate the funds to cover the costs of running the event.
The list of activities continues to grow:
Kids: Little Supernovas drama, Boogiemites, Mini Magic, Art, Scouts, Kickstars, Tennis 4 Kids, Story-telling, Drumming, Bug Hunts, Face-painting and more
Adults: Bowling, Yoga, T’ai Chi, Dog show, Croydon Transition Town stall, Croydon Voluntary Action stall
Don’t forget your Picnic (we will have a tea stall and ice cream van) and friends, family or neighbours.
We hope to see some of you on Sunday. Thanks for our continued support.
The access walkways and staircases were all prefabricated off site and lifted into place over one weekend by a huge crane. It was all ready to go the next monday morning. Incredible bit of construction. It will in time add lifts to all platforms and is part of the platform lengthening. New toilets, waiting room and information systems have be ready for some time. Its all very welcome. Hopefully things will continue to improve in ThorntonHeath!
